Thornleigh Physiotherapy was established in 1985 providing service to Thornleigh, Westleigh, Normanhurst, Pennant Hill,s Wahroonga and surrounding areas. Thornleigh Physiotherapy is patient focused, providing one to one 30 minute treatment sessions per client and is primarily musculoskeletal based, with a special interest in spinal therapy. This includes the treatment of low back pain and sciatica, neck and shoulder pain and headaches. We take interest in workplace and home workstation ergonomics, integrating this into the treatment plan. Exercise regimes are tailored to individual patients with consideration of capabilities, requirements and life style with encouragement to maintain home exercises.
Graduates of Sydney University (Cumberland College of Health Sciences) Alan and Janelle have attended continuing education overseas and have worked in South Africa and Canada. Professional development is ongoing with commitment to review and upgrade assessment and treatment protocol. Over thirty years in the Thornleigh ,Westleigh Pennant Hills Hornsby and Wahroonga, Alan and Janelle are well informed of the referral network to general practitioners, medical specialists other allied health professionals and diagnostic centres. A doctors referral is not necessary for claiming services from your private fund but liaising with the client’s medical practitioner can be beneficial.
AREAS WE TREAT
The Physiotherapy profession covers a broad spectrum of services. Thornleigh Physiotherapy treats symptoms related to sport injuries, age, overuse, or rehabilitation post surgery. The initial treatment consists of assessment and treatment. Early, accurate diagnosis relies on the clinical skills and experience of the therapist and expedites the treatment progression. When needed this may require collaboration with a GP, specialist or diagnostic centre. Attention is paid to identifying underlying causes and maintaining results long term. This is assisted by implementing an exercise programme and identifying ergonomic factors that may present barriers to recovery .
This treatment approach is applied to the following
SPINE
Neck and shoulder pain, headaches, back pain which may include Sciatica, thigh and groin pain.
SHOULDER
Rotator cuff strains, stiff shoulder (also called frozen shoulder), post operative rehabilitation using protocols provided by the surgeon.
KNEE
Patella tracking problems in the young and older patient, ligament and muscle strains and the arthritic knee.
FOOT AND ANKLE
Plantar fasciitis, acute ankle sprains and strains.
If your pain is severe, or associated with symptoms of feeling unwell, please consult your medical practitioner or local hospital department.
ORTHOTICS
Orthotics can be supplied to assist in the treatment and assessment of some conditions. However, the service does not replace the expertise of a Podiatrist.
EQUIPMENT
A limited number of braces, crutches, weights and balance boards are available for loan on a needs basis.
ERGONOMIC ASSESSMENT
These are made in conjunction with the treatment regime. Photos of workplace and home office assist in the assessment.
HOME VISITS
Home visits are restricted to a 10km radius for patients who are unable to attend rooms. Generally this covers, Westleigh, Thornleigh, Normanhurst, Pennant Hills, Wahroonga, Cherrybrook, Hornsby and Beecroft. This service extends to Department of Veteran Affairs patients.
FALLS PREVENTION
Balance assessment and exercises when needed are generally integrated with rooms and home visits. To assist the balance exercise programme two DVD’s made by N.S.W. Health and Monash University are available. These exercises are safe, simple to follow and are best implemented with an assessment of suitability from a therapist.
Why US
Our Experience Counts
Thornleigh Physiotherapy was established 32 years ago by Alan Carrington and Janelle Ward Physiotherapists. The practice offers a collaborative and multi modal approach with the benefit of our combined experience. This multi modal approach may help to expedite a successful outcome and achieve satisfaction with longer term results. For example, Alan uses a specialist technique for the treatment of cervicogenic headaches ( headaches radiating from the neck). Although the treatment can eliminate or reduce headaches the underlying causes maybe multi factorial. Investigation into work and office ergonomics, types of glasses, sleeping postures etc, etc, may help to address causes and avoid ongoing exacerbation.
Over the past 32 years we have developed a network with other health professionals including General Practitioners, Orthopaedic Surgeons, Radiologists , Podiatrists, Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists. When needed this network may facilitate appropriate referral or redirection to other necessary therapy services.
Easy Parking
Thornleigh Physiotherapy, located on Duffy Avenue, has ample side street and two off street parking spaces within 10 metres of the practice entrance. Easy accessibility for the disabled, older patients and general public is an important feature of the practice location.
